<p>Stabilizing the dimensions of the equilibrium ribbon formed by controlling the temperature of the glass layer in the tank of a float glass apparatus. The power input to electric heating elements within the tank is modulated in response to direct measurement of the temperature of the glass layer. The radiant energy emitted by the surface of the glass layer is directly sensed and transformed into an electrical signal corresponding to the temperature of the surface. This signal is compared by suitable control means with that of a predetermined set point, and differences therebetween initiate a response from electrical control means to correct deviations by appropriately increasing or decreasing the power input to the heating elements.</p> |
