Metal moulds made as cast shells backed by stiffening ribs which can be boxed in by ancillary plates to enclose passages for a heat transfer fluid. The ribs should incorporate holes to assist circulation. Suitable for relatively large, deep draw cavities, esp. for blow moulding tools. Lighter than tools with cavities machined in a solid block, does not require precision drilling to establish coolant passages, readily accommodates large volume coolant flaws. Reduced metal volume permits use of relatively dense, hard wearing alloys, reduces risk of residual hot spots on the tool surface.
|
