1371484 Picking sticks SULZER BROS Ltd 1 May 1973 [12 May 1972] 20665/73 Heading DIE [Also in Division F2] A loom picking lever comprises a hub 1 having formed thereon, or clamped thereto (Figs. 4a and b not shown) a lever arm 3 made up from strips 15-103 &c of resinimpregnated carbon, or boron, fibre material to combine high mechanical strength with lightness. As shown, the resin-impregnated carbon fibre strips 15-103 are arranged within and on either side of a resin-impregnated carbon fibre loop 40 which at one end is mounted within grooved side walls 11, 12 of a tongue 13 of the hub 1 and a spacer ring 46 and end discs 30, 70 also of resin-impregnated carbon fibre material being arranged to form an aperture at the other end, the assembly of the hub 1 and the various resin-impregnated carbon fibre elements 15-103, 40, 46, 30 and 70 being formed together under heat and pressure into an integral composite lever. The carbon fibre strips 15-103 may be of differing relative lengths as shown or of the same length (Figs. 4a and 4b not shown) to produce a tapered or constant thickness lever arm 3. The strips arranged each side of the loop may be formed with integral apertured ends 107 (Fig. 2) to dispense with the discs 30 and 70. The carbon fibre strips 15-103 are cut such that the fibre direction in each strip is alternated from one strip to the next so as to be parallel with or at 45‹ either side of the centerline axis of the lever arm 3, as indicated by short lines in Fig. 1. In Figs. 4a and 4b (not shown) the composite carbon fibre lever arm (115) is separately formed and simply clamped to the hub (110) by a cover (116) to readily facilitate replacement of the lever arm (115). |
