Apparatus and method for tying cord about end turn portions of coils projecting beyond a side surface of a magnetic core carrying side turn portions of the coils where the end turns may be nonradially aligned or otherwise irregularly oriented. The core which may be a dynamoelectric machine stator core having an axially extending bore and which may have coil accepting slots communicating with the bore, not all of which extend radially therefrom, is supported by a holder which may be selectively rotated to move the core through an angular path about its axis to sequentially present different end turn positions to a tying unit. The holder in turn is displaceably supported in engagement with a selectively rotatable cam the rotation of which moves the core relative to the tying unit to better align the tying unit with specific end turn positions.
