Liquid epoxy organopolysiloxanes for paper treatment - by alkaline equilibration of mixt. of epoxy organo-siloxanes in presence of water

Liq. epoxy-substd organopolysiloxanes are prepd by equilibrating a mixt of organosiloxanes, at least 1 of which contains an epoxy-substd org. substit, in presence of a basic equilibration catalyst, where the mixt contains is not >1 wt. % of water. The epoxypolysiloxanes are used in prodn of synthetic fibres and for improving the water-resistance of paper. Reaction may be in absence of solvents. The cost of removing water from the raw materials is avoided. In prepg. the initial mixt a 20 wt. % excess of epoxy monomer is sufficient, compared with a 100% excess in known processes. Loss of epoxy monomer o by polymerisation is avoided. The epoxypolysiloxanes show little discolouration on storage, and are of uniform quality.
