<p>The rotor discs (1, 2) cast in spherical graphite iron and which are in interference fit on the vehicle axle (3) which is locally enlarged to suit the rotor bores, have vanes (13) which circulate cooling air when the vehicle is moving. A brake cylinder (10) with pistons (11) carrying brake pads (12) is fitted between the innere faces of the discs. Spheroidal graphite cast iron provides a suitable friction surface and also is strong enough to withstand the high stresses due to the interference fit. An alternative design uses a steel ring (14) cast inside the disc (2) and secured by the holes (15).</p> |
