Inlet manifold for IC engine - manifold has tracts incorporating an S bend

A cross-section through one tract of an inlet manifold is shown. The tract has two parallel openings of diameters Dv and Dz for connecting it to a carburettor and a cylinder head respectively. The inital portion of the track is of "S" shape and extends over a projected length VS equal to 1.2 to 1.5 times the diameter Dv and over this length the tract tapers to its final diameter Dz. The overall length of the track is between 1.5 and 2.0 times the length VS. Pref. the vertical offset between the inlet and outlet openings is the mean of the two diameters Dv and Dz. The tract is not restricted to the tapered portion lying within the "S" shaped bend. Manifold avoids pollution by inburnt fuel in the exhaust gases from the engine.
