Safety belt damper exerts a progressive tension on the belt and damps the impact on the wearer, with units which suppress the rebound rearward of the occupant. Part of the damper is attached with one end to the vehicle body, and the other end is attached to the belt. A pull rod which can be displaced against the action of a compression spring has a return motion stop system. Preferably the rod is a rack and the damper has notches on one side for engagement of a spring-loaded locking pawl. A pinion engages the rack and can be actuated by a crank which can return the damper in to its working position after the pawl is released from the rod.
