Cooler for solids-laden hot flue gases has flat, parallel cooling surfaces in rows, with coolant passed through them and with cooling spaces between them through which the gas is passed. Wipers project from above into the cooling spaces to clean the vertical surfaces of deposited solids. Wiper strands hang in each cooling space with their upper ends attached to a carriage which is guided at 90 deg. to the rows of cooling pockets and cooling spaces and parallel to the surfaces to be cleaned. Preferably the cooling compartments are formed by cooling pockets and each have two parallel sheet metal sidewalls interconnected by edged sheet metal end walls; the cooling spaces are bounded by cooling pockets and frame pieces between them.
