1428270 Thermosetting moulding composition BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 8 Nov 1974 [26 Nov 1973] 54751/73 Heading C3P A thermosetting dough moulding composition is prepared by passing continuous filaments of a fibrous material through a liquid resin system comprising an unsaturated polyester, a copolymerizable monomer, a particulate inorganic filler, and an initiator, and having an olefin polymer dissolved therein, and subsequently chopping the coated filaments to form a homogeneous dough. The filaments may comprise glass fibre rovings, and other fillers may be added to the composition in an amount of 20-50% by weight thereof. The comonomer, which may act as solvent for the unsaturated polyester (e.g. styrene), may comprise 20-60% by weight of the total of polyester and comonomer. The olefin polymer may be polyethylene of density 0À915-0À925 gm./c.c., and may be used in an amount of 5-20% by weight of the total of polyester and comonomer. The liquid system may be heated to up to 70‹ C. to allow the polyolefin to dissolve, and the filaments may be passed therethrough while still at an elevated temperature, the coated filaments then being chopped (e.g. to length 12-50 mm.) and cooled. |
