1400906 Changing wheel gauge; tractors; steering linkages BOBARD JEUNE 2 May 1973 [4 May 1972] 20860/73 Headings B7D and B7H In a straddle tractor comprising two side frames which each carry a driving wheel and a steerable wheel and are slidably mounted on cross members 10, 11 so that the distance between the frames can be varied by an hydraulic ram 13 to change the wheel gauge, a composite track rod linking the steerable wheels on the two frames includes at least one toothed rack 23d, 23g engaging a pinion 24 connected by a variablelength universally-jointed shaft to a shaft 17 carrying pinions 16, 21 meshing with racks 22d, 22g and 15d, 15g connected to the side frames adjacent the cross members 10, 11. The pinions rotate in unison as the distance between the side frames is varied to synchronize movement of the racks, so that the track rod length is automatically adjusted to the wheel gauge and movements of the front and rear ends of the side frame are co-ordinated to avoid jamming on the cross-menbers.
