1400506 Luffing-arm apparatus; slings; loading vehicles W G ANDERSON 18 July 1972 33614/72 Headings B8H and B8E Invalid lifting apparatus which is mounted on the door 18 of a vehicle comprises a lift arm 58 to whose outer end an invalid sling assembly 26 is attached, its other end being pivotally attached at 60 to a standard member 56 which is releasably attached by means of knuckle joints 92 to a base bracket 22 which comprises an upright portion 34 and an arcuate down-turned portion 36. The lift arm 58 and thus the sling assembly 26 is raised and lowered relative to the standard member 56 by means of an hydraulic jack 64 which includes a manually operative handle 76 for extending the jack 64, a valve lever 78 being provided for releasing the jack fluid. Each of the knuckle joints 92 consists of a downwardly projecting pin portion 98 on the standard member 56 which engages in, and is freely turnable in, a joint socket 94 on the member 34. The knuckle joints 92 permit rotation of the standard member 56, lift arm 58 and sling assembly 26 about a vertical axis. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the base bracket (22a) is of a two-part configuration comprising elements (34a, 36a) whose portions (34a1, 36a1) are in parallel engagement, the elements (34a, 36a) being movable relative to each other to accommodate doors of different widths. The base bracket (22a) is provided with hand operative screw means (100a, 101a) for stationarily securing the base bracket (22a) on the vehicle door. In this embodiment the lift arm (58a) is raised and lowered about pivot (60a) by mechanical screw jack means (64a). In a still further embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the invalid lifting apparatus is mounted on a standard element (27d) which is fixedly secured between the ceiling and floor surfaces (16d, 14d) of a room. The sling assembly 26, Figs. 2, 3, is articulatedly supported on the lift arm 58 by means of an interengaging hook 80 and eye 82, swivel means 84 permitting angular turning movement of the sling assembly 26 relative to the arm 58. The assembly 26 consists of a flexible seat and back band 42, 44, the seat band 42 being releasably connected by means of chains 48 to a yoke 46 on which the hook 80 and swivel means 84 are mounted, the back band 44 being releasably connected by means of S-shaped hooks 52 to the chains 48. The sling assembly may also be provided with a flexible safety strap (51d), Fig. 7 (not shown), which is connected by means of hook elements (53d) with the back band.
