Belt spreader for forming long tips from loose material has a spreading conveyor with a vertically adjustable delivery end traversing an arc of 180 deg. in the horizontal plane. It has a material receiving end positioned on the axis of its rotation in a vertical structure rotatably mounted on a base frame traversing side of the tip. The material is loaded on the receiving end of hte spreader conveyor by a belt loop carriage of a feeder conveyor located above the receiving end of the spreader conveyor. The rotatable vertical structure which is symmetrical has its centre of gravity located its axis of rotation and the weight of the spreader conveyor and the spreader conveyor balancing jib and weights are so distributed that the centre of gravity of all rotating parts is located near or on the axis of rotation.
