Uniaxially drawn films or tapes of polyethylene, 1,2-diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylate (I), or blends or copolyesters of I with is not >20 (17), esp. 10% polyethylene terephthalate (II) are prepd by melt extrusion to a film, cooling the film to 60 degrees C, uniaxially drawing the film at 70-180 degrees C (70-120 degrees C) to is not 2x the initial length and then heating the drawn film to 120-200 degrees C (160-200 degrees C), which is > the drawing temp, while preventing or limiting shrinkage. The films or tapes are harder and stronger than those from (II); thinner tapes can therefore be used. The film does not fibrillate. The films are used to make recording or video tapes, capacitors, typewritter ribbons, perforated tapes, parcelling string, and adhesive tapes.
|
