3-NITRO-P-CRESOL-(1) IS PRODUCED BY NITRATION OF P-CRESOL CARBONATE, PRECIPITATION OF 3-NITRO-P-CRESOL CARBONATE BY DILUTION WITH WATER AT 85 DEG TO 100 DEG C and saponification of the carbonate in aqueous ammonia at 60 DEG to 80 DEG C or in the presence of amines at a temperature of not more than 80 DEG C. The product is a starting material for the production of dyes and herbicides.
