1359463 Vehicle wheels and tyres DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 9 June 1971 [20 June 1970] 30029/70 Heading B7C A wheel has a rim with a pair of tyre bead retaining flanges 2, 3 having substantially axially outwardly extending portions 4, 5 for supporting the sidewalls of a tyre mounted on the rim should the tyre become deflated, the radially outer surface of each portion 4, 5 having a coating of a low friction material, e.g. P.T.F.E. The wheel is used with a tyre 6 which has a tread width T-T greater than the overall axial width R-R of the rim and whose radially inner sidewall regions may be coated with a low friction material and/or may include a low friction rubber compound, e.g. containing poly-butadiene or natural rubber. The wheel rim may have means for preventing the tyre from being dislodged from the rim when running deflated, which means may comprise a radially outwardly projecting bead spacer or movable studs for preventing movement of at least one tyre bead, and/or a flat base 1 on the rim, i.e. a base without a well into which the beads can fall. The flat base rim may be divisible to permit tyre mounting and demounting, or may be a "crimped" rim, i.e. a rim initially formed with a well which is then closed up when a tyre has been mounted on the rim.
