Antibacterial and animal growth promoting agents of the formula WHEREIN R is hydrogen or methyl; X ia CN, COCH3, CONR1R2, CONH(CH2)n-R3 or COOR4; Y is hydrogen or X; Z1 is a 6- or 7-position substituent and is H, CH3, Cl, OCH3, SO2NH2, SO2NH(CH3) or SO2N(CH3)2; Z2 is a 7- or 6-position substituent and is H, Cl or CH3, with the proviso that when Z2 is Cl or CH3, Z1 is also Cl or CH3; each of R1, R2 and R4 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; R3 is OH or N(CH3)2; n jis 2 or 3; and the pharmaceutically-acceptable salts thereof; i.e., alkali metal, ammonium and mine salts of those compounds wherein at least one of X or Y is COOH; and acid addition salts of those compounds wherein X is CONH(CH2)n-N(CH3)2.
