Determination of chloro-methyl methyl ether - by reacting with alkali metal salt of hydroxy compound, chromatographing and detecting

Presence of chloromethyl methyl ether (I) or bis-(chloromethyl) ether (II) in a fluid is determined by (a) reacting (I) or (II) with (III) an alkali metal salt of a 1-4 alcohol, phenol, alkoxyphenol, alkylphenol, chlorophenol, bromophenol, chloropyridinol, or chlorothiophenol, this salt being dissolved in a 1-4C alcohol, (b) passing the reaction prod. through a gas chromatographic column, (c) passing the eluted components thorugh a detector, and (d) presenting the outout from this detector on a reading device. The method shows good sensibility, stability and specifically for the determination of small amts. of (I) and (II) in fluids. It is esp. for determining (I) and/or (II) at the same time as other formaldehyde-generating components present in a stream of (I) in order to precisely eqilibriate the chloromethylation reactions in the prodn. of ion exchange resins.
