An image intensifying device comprises (a) a radiation-responsive layer donating electrons in response to excitation by incident radiation, (b) a piezoelectric polarised ferro-electric ceramic layer bonded to (a), (c) a phosphor connected to (b), emitting radiation in response to vibrations in (b), (d) an electric potential applied across (a) and (b) and causing vibrations in (b) and (e) opt. an optically opaque layer between (b) and (c). When the radiation-responsive layer is excited by incident radiation, energy is transferred from it through the piezoelectric layer to the phosphor.
