Carbazole derivs. of formula (I): tetrazolyl, cyano, (where R1 is hydroxymethyl, alkanoyloxymethyl, tetrazolyl, cyano, oximinocarbonyl, aminocarbonyl, or carboxyl or its salt with a physiologically tolerable base, its ester with a physiologically innocuous amine; R2 is halogen inthe 3- or 4- position; R3 and R4 are H, halogen, lower alkyl, CF3 or lower alkoxy; R5 and R6 are H, halogen, lower alkyl, CF3 or lower alkoxy or are linked so as to form the residue of a 5- or 6-membered isocyclic ring; and R7 is H or 1-8C hydrocarbyl), e.g. 4-chlorocarbazole-1-carboxylic acid methyl ester, are new cpds. (I) are topical anti-inflammatory agents. The toxicity of (I) is low (and the systemic effects of anti-inflammatory effect is accompanied by a certain antibacterial and antifungal activity. (I) can be used for the local treatment of allergies, contact dermatitis, eczema, neurodermatitis, erythrodermia, burns, pruritis vulave, pruritis ani, rosacea, erythematodes cutaneus, psoriasis, lichen ruber etc.
