PROCESS FOR REMOVING CHLORINE FROM A SOLUTION OF ZINC SULPHATE

Chlorine is removed from a soln. of zinc sulphte by first reducing th pH to 2.6 by addn. of sulphuric acid then increasing the content of cupric ions in soln. to a value such that after elimination of chlorine by pptn. as CuCl. the excess cupric ions are present to an amt. >0.5 g/l. The CuCl is then treated with NaOH to recover Cu2O which is recycled forming fresh CuCl. The process is cheaper than the prior art process of pptn. with Ag, which tended to lose some of the silver.
