<p>The castor (4) is fitted with an automatic brake which prevents the wheel from moving when the load is released from it. This type of castor is used on office chairs so that they can be moved when occupied, and which are stabilised when empty. The mounting shaft (12) of the castor support is linked to a spring loaded brake lever (7) which is pivotted inside the castor cowl (2b). The castor itself is stepped and has a braking ledge (6a) set some way into the centre of the wheel from the running surface. This provides a secure braking surface which is not easily coated with floor polish etc. from the floor contact, and which is an improvement on the axle brake with its inherent axle damage.</p> |
