A guide sleeve (1) accommodates rotary (2) and axially-sliding (3) components with slide faces (6, 7) machined on them, and subject to the action of a preloaded spring (4). The spring can be a pressure coil spring or comprise a column of plate springs. The faces can be shaped to withstand torque in one or both directions, giving a damping effect in either or both directions. The design transmits torque through a definite angle, but when this angle is exceeded, e.g. due to torsional oscillation, the spring torque rate rises very sharply but within accurately defined limits, so as to damp the oscillation out.
