Folding machine for sheet material, especially paper sheets, includes a pair of rotating discs positioned opposite each other with a gap between them for the folded sheet. One disc is fitted with a non-elastic ring and the other with an elastic ring positioned the non-elastic ring of the first disc. The rings produce between them a groove in a sheet passing in the gap between the discs. The paper sheet is prefolded along the groove by a device and the folding is completed by another device which squeezes together the preformed fold. One disc is mounted on an adjustable axis in order that the depth of the groove can be altered.
