Dashboard pull out handbrake - with deep ratchets in brake lever shaft to prevent inadvertent release

The pull out handbrake control has a set of ratchet teeth (10) cut along one side and these are engaged by a spring loaded ratchet (15) as the shaft is pulled out of the dashboard. To release the brake the handgrip is twisted to bring the ratchet onto the smooth part of the shaft. To prevent inadvertent release of the handbrake due to brushing against the handgrip the ratchet is designed so that its line of action with the teeth is just in front of the vertical line through the pivot point of the ratchet. This provides a maximum locking force, especially with the teeth deep in the shaft.
