The elastic element balances out the weight to be determined. The elastic element (4) is directly or indirectly electrically heated, and its elasticity is changed by varying heating power, and thus its temperature, until the tensile or torsional stress corresponding to the weight to be determined is balanced out. Heating power applied to the elastic element is evaluated as a measure for the weight. A weight scale (2) is at one end of a balance beam (1) and a balance weight (3) at the other end. The wire element (4) is in series with a current source (6), a control resistor (5) and an ammeter (9).
