Vegetable foodstuffs, e.g. mushrooms, are produced and packed in transportable containers by placing a dry nutrient, opt. a substrate and seed in the containers and initiating growth by adding water. The method facilitates distribution of the vegetable and the food may be grown (dis)continuously as reqd. The containers, e.g. of polystyrene foam are filled with known nutrients (biological/mineral fertilisers) opt. mixed with a substrate, e.g. UF foam or sawdust.
