Antimicrobial cpds. are of formula a (I): (where R1 and R4 are each H, 1-16C alkyl (opt. substd. by halogen, OH or amino), cyclohexyl or phenyl (opt. substd. by halogen or alkyl), with the proviso that the total no. of C in R1 and R4 is =20 and one of R1 and R4 is 8-18C aliph. hydrocarbyl and R2 and R3 are each H or (halogen-substd.) 1-4C alkyl). (I) are bactericides as well as bacteriostats and are effective in low concns. (pref. 0.5-5 wt. % as bactericides and 0.1-2 wt. % as bacteriostats).
