A horizontal conveyor belt (39) carries folded paper sheets to a vertical transfer belt arrangement (18, 19, 20). At the lower end of this transfer conveyor two horizontal endless belts (12, 13) are placed. They have a number of perpendicular spacer elements (14) attached. When the folded paper arrives at the bottom of the vertical transfer conveyor, a pusher moves it onto the horizontal belts (12, 13) against the spacer (14). This process is repeated until a horizontal stack which occupies the space between two spacers (14) is formed. The finished stack is then removed by two vertical clamp plates (81, 82).
