The digital display for a timepiece mechanism comprises a front polariser and separate rotating segmental polarisers (23-29) positioned behind it. The segmental polarisers (23-29) may be carried by respective rotating discs (23a-29a), the latter formed from a light opaque material, with a dark backing plate behind the segmental polarisers (23-29). Pref. the rotating discs (23a - 29a) carrying the segmental polarisers (23-29) are coupled via cog wheels provided along the rotary shaft of each disc, cooperating with control discs, which are intermittently rotated via a common drive motor.
