A lamp housing for fluorescent type lights has a light block unit as its base or main component whic is constructed from a body housing (1) which is clear or translucent to the light from the lamp (2) and which contains the lamp (2), starter device (3), fittings (4, 5) for the lap (2) and electrical input attachments (7). This complete housing (1) forming the lamp block can be inserted in its entirety into a support or holder (12, 15) of conventional design, having the appropriate cut out section profile to allow insertion and rigid retention of the lamp block. Preferably the connector socket can be detachably secured at one end of the housing in such a way that it can be aligned in alternative positions.
