The multi-core cable is connected to a connector by connecting the potential to specific terminals of the connector which are selected by addressing. The evaluator identifies a short-circuit and a line discontinuity. Faults and the fault location are optically indicated. Two address counters (AZ1, AZ2) are controlled synchronously via a central clock (TG). The first address counter (AZ1) controls the connector which is designed as an activation circuit (AKe and equipped with terminals (1 to 60) for the cable (K) and with terminals for the connection of the interrogator (AE), and also a first optical indicator (An1). The second address counter (AZ2) controls the interrogator (AE) and a second optical indicator (AN2).
