A machine for brushing or polishing hollowware workpieces, particularly of non-symmetrical shape with respect to an axis of rotation, comprises at least one cylindrical polishing means 4 mounted on a tool spindle, at least one workpiece carrier 5 mounted for rotation about at least one axis on a workpiece support 6 movable parallel to the tool spindle and a slide 7 movable perpendicularly to the spindle, the workpiece support and slide being controlled by adjusting devices 30, 31 operable by hand or foot-operated levers 33, 34, and the speeds of the support and slide being proportional to the movements of the levers. As described, the machine has three polishing mops or brushes 4, Fig. 1 (not shown), each of which is driven by a belt-drive 14 from an associated motor 1, the mops or brushes and the motors being mounted on an upper part 2 of the machine carried by pivots in blocks 13 on side supports 12 of a base 11. The upper part is swingable about the pivots to engage the mops or brushes with the workpieces by a foot pedal 9, a spring buffer 10 limiting the upward movement of the part, the weight of which is balanced by a weight 18. The workpiece carrier 5 is mounted on the support 6 and is rotated by an electric motor 26, gear 27 and transmission 28, the rotary movement being controlled by selective use of limit switches 29. The support 6 is provided with rollers 22 engaging guide rods 23 and is movable therealong by an hydraulic cylinder 24. The rods 23 are mounted on the slide 7 which has rollers 19 engaging rods 20 on the base 11 and is movable by an hydraulic cylinder 21. The supply of fluid pressure to the cylinders is controlled by valves 30, 31 having operating levers 33, 34 whereby the movements of the support 6 and slide 7 are controlled independently. In another embodiment, the supply and exhaust to both cylinders is controlled by four valves mounted in a common block, a single control lever 45, Fig. 5 (not shown), being mounted on a universal joint on the block and having a flat disc 54 against which the ends of the valves are spring-pressed so that both cylinders are controlled from the single lever. The work carrier 5a, Fig. 3 (not shown), may be adjustable about a pivot 41 on the support. The mops or brushes may be adjustable about axes 44, Fig. 4 (not shown). In another embodiment, the slides for the workpiece are lifted to feed the work to the mops or brushes. |
