The height adjustable suspended lighting fitting is held on a string or rope. The helical electrical cable encloses the string and the string free end is connected, after passing over a pulley on ceiling, to a counterweight. The counterweight 18 has a central hole 35 for enclosing the electric cable and the string is held eccentrically on the counterweight. This counterweight housing can be made from plastics or sheet metal and the centre of gravity of the counterweight is in line with the string. This arrangement is relatively simple mechanically and has aesthetically pleasing appearance.
