The crate has a base, a pair of opposite end walls and a rear wall, the top and front being left open. A reinforcing member (8) is movable from a working position between the opposite end walls (3) near the front, so as to regulate the distance between them, and a non-effective position near the rear wall (2). The member can be U-shaped and hinge-mounted. Both in the working and non-effective positions the arms of the U(8a) fit into the sidewalls, and in the latter position the base of the U fits inside the rear wall. Where crates are stacked one on top of the other, the underside of the base can have a recess accommodating the reinforcing member of the crate below when in the working position.
