The lathe has two or more rotary chucks, which can be coupled to a drive and indexed into a number of working positions. The chuck axes are at angles of 90 deg., to each other so that after each completed operation one is vertical and one horizontal. The vertical chuck axis (9) and faceplate (7) face downwards, and underneath it is a lifting table (18) movable up and down by a drive mechanism. The table can be equipped with a slide travelling at right angles to the direction of lift, and the machine bed (4) with the guide for the tool saddle (12) can be situated above the work, forming with the base (1) a closed frame.
