1450426 Dyed anodized metal or alloy MARTIN MARIETTA CORP 21 Nov 1973 [27 Nov 1972] 54019/73 Heading C7B A radiation absorbent surface is produced on an anodically-oxidizable metal or alloy, e.g. Al (alloy) or Be, by roughening a surface thereof with alumina grit to form a plurality of peaks and valleys, anodizing to form an oxide layer on the peaks and valleys, e.g. in a 9À5% sulphuric acid solution preferably saturated with CO 2 for 1À75- 2À25 hours, and dyeing the oxide layer, e.g. black with Nicrosine for optical use such as in telescope tubes or camera housings, or on vacuum chamber walls, or gold, red, green or blue for decorative panels. Prior to roughening, the surface may be degreased and maintained wet until after dyeing. After roughening the surface may be masked with tape and cleaned e.g. with caustic etch prior to anodizing. After dyeing the oxide surface may be sealed in water at 93‹C. |
