Gas to be cooled passes through line 7, space 1, gas pipes 12 (Fig. 2), cooling pipes 13 (Fig. 1, where only one is indicated in full), and gas discharge lines 8. Coolant is supplied through line 9 which discharges within a tube 18 mounted above the separating plate 11. The coolant flows through the cooling space and leaves through a discharge line 10. The gas pipes 12 have cooling jackets 15 (Fig. 2). Some of the coolant is supplied through lines 17 and passes through the jackets 15 into the cooling space 2. Within each jacket, coolant passes down and around a tubular partition 20 in a lower section of the jacket. The inner diameters of each jacket at its lower, intermediate and upper sections become successively smaller. The gas supply space 1 is lined with refractory material 6. The lower part of the plate 11 may be insulated with an asbestos fibre or mineral wool blanket or a layer of ceramic material. An additional cooler (not shown) with coolant supply and discharge lines may surround the cooling jackets 15. Numerical values are given for sizes of parts of the heat exchanger, conductivity of refractory material, gas temperature and pressure, coolant water temperature and pressure, and steam pressure.</p>
