1460661 Detergent compositions COLGATEPALMOLIVE CO 7 Jan 1974 [9 Jan 1973] 00569/74 Heading C5D A detergent composition containing paraffin sulphonate and inorganic sulphate is prepared by making a paraffin sulphonic acid by a reaction which also produces sulphuric acid and results in sulphur dioxide and free paraffin being present in the mixed acids, neutralizing the paraffin sulphonic acid and sulphuric acid with an alkali metal, ammonium or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate to produce paraffin sulphonate and inorganic sulphate, raising the temperature of the mix to vaporize off water, sulphur dioxide and paraffin, converting the product to a form such that, at the elevated temperature, the remainder of the water, sulphur dioxide and paraffin, if any, are removed, and either solidifying the mix, converting it into particulate form and mixing in other constituents of a detergent composition to produce a mixture of higher solids content, drying it and converting it to free-flowing particulate form, or while the mix is in a fluid state, admixing other constituents of the detergent composition so that the mixture is of higher solids content, drying the product and converting it to free-flowing particulate form. The sulphonate may be sodium C 14 -C 20 paraffin monosulphonate, and the neutralized mix may contain sodium paraffin monosulphonates and sodium sulphate in a weight ratio of from 1 : 2 to 3 : 1. The product may also contain pentasodium tripolyphosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, trisodium nitrilotriacetate, sodium carbonate, sodium silicate, sodium linear dodecyl benzene sulphonate, the condensation product of a C 14 -C 15 fatty alcohol with 11 moles of ethylene oxide and adjuvants in minor amounts. The neutralizing agent may be sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate or bicarbonate.
