The front cheek is automatically locked with the mandrel during winding of the coil, and it can be removed from it together with the other cheek. The mandrel (1) has a central hole (11) which runs from its free end, and there is a pin (9) in the outer cheek which is driven by a spring (10) through a radial hole in the mandrel (1) into its axial hole (11). It can be pushed out by a pin (13) which may be inserted into the central hole. The pin has a sharp end (12) which comes into contact with the rounded end of the pin (9). Once the pint (13) is pushed fully home, the end of the pin can slide up an inclined ramp (17) as the cheek is slid off the mandrel.
