The opposite edges of the belt, esp a belt of filter material running over the periphery of a rotary drum filter, each pass between a pair of guide rollers whose axes lie at two different angles to the direction perpendicular to the belt axis of motion. The pivots on which the rollers run are joined to one arm of a bell crank whose other arm is moved to and fro by linear actuators controlled by edge sensing devices, through servo systems, in such a way as to maintain the belt in lateral position.
