The equipment for filling and emptying containers is particularly used for handling refuse. Inside the container there is a movable shield (13), which acts as a compression plate when filling and an ejector plate when emptying. Means can be provided on the container for locking it to the filling mechanism, and these means are typically hydraulically actuated. The shield can be driven by ropes or chains (4) in conjunction with a winch (2) mounted on the container. A balancer beam (11) can be used to compensate differences in lengths between the ropes on opposite sides, it can swivel on a pivot (14) which is mounted on the shield.
