<p>An insulating layer is applied to selected parts of the stator of an alternator for a vehicle by blowing a mixture of expoxy resin and a softening agent onto the areas to be coated while the stator is rotated and while it is hot. The selected parts are the sides (10b) of the rim (10) and the radial fingers (12) on which the coils are wound. The powdered mixture is drawn from a fluidiser (44) to pass through tubes (42, 43) to injection nozzles (40, 41) in line with the rim, blown by compressed air from a supply source (48). The nozzles protrude from arc shaped shrouds (33, 34) on collector boxes (35, 36) connected by tubes (37, 38) to a suction source (39). A mandrel on which the stator ring is mounted, and rotating it, has flanges (20) which protect the remainder of the ring. This mandrel has spring loaded radial rods which engage the inside of the ring to support it.</p> |
