Electrical machines are designed to provide cooling arrangement allowing their use at higher power levels without increasing the overall size of the machine the design is also intended to simplify and reduce the cost of such machines. The stator elements are spaced away from the outer securing shell allowing the free flow of cooling air, the spacing being bar shaped supports extending longitudinally in the perpendicular plane of the machine axis. Air channels are also provided in the structure of the laminated pole pieces. End pieces provide support and are secured in the depth of the shell and cross braces parallel to the axis of the stator provide further strengthening members.
