Phosphoroscope for measuring fluid or solid samples - uses phase sensitivity and reference channel method with fast electronic switching

The phosphoroscope for measuring the spectral composition and life of phosphorescence in a fluid or solid sample uses a measuring and reference channel arrangement. A light source passes through a rotating grating to the sample chamber and the chopping device position is detected by a lamp and photo-transistor. The output of the detector, e.g. photomultiplier, is passed by an electronic switch to a phase-sensitive amplifier. The amplifier output drives a recording or indicating device. The switching action of the transistor is controlled by a comparator connected between the reference and measuring channels. Any fluorescence present is automatically suppressed.
