The steering shaft (2) is provided with an arm (4) which is firmly clamped to it and able to pull an inextendable steel wire anchored to a spring loaded drum (7) able to turn on an axis parallel and at a radial distance from that of the steering shaft axis. The drum (9) contains a strong spiral spring (11) whose inner end is fixed to the drum spindle and (10) outer end to the drum periphery. The drum radius is exactly chosen to correspond with the pull wire length to allow a complete revolution of the steering shaft in both directions. The arm is of a greater radius than the shaft, so that the largest torque tends to keep the wheel centred with a lower torque at either side.
