1478190 Suction head CORNING GLASS WORKS 11 Sept 1974 [13 Sept 1973] 39549/74 Heading B8H [Also in Division B3] Suction head, for use in moving workpieces, e.g. television tubes, to and from a grinding machine and holding same whilst they are ground, comprises a first support plate 31 connected for rotation with a suspension shaft 38 and having a downwardly depending annular ring 28 with a tapered curved surface 28a and a semi-spherical central surface 33a. A second support plate 23 has an upwardly extending ring 25 with a surface 25a complementary to the surface 28a and a semispherical socket 25d to receive the semi-spherical surface 33a, to form outer and inner ball and socket connections respectively. A spring 44 acts between the support plates to bias same away from one another and thereby force surfaces 25a, 28a into engagement to prevent any pivotal movement between the support plates, and a bolt 46 extends through a slot 25e in the ring 25 and engages with the first support plate to transmit any rotational movement transmitted to the first support plate by the shaft, to the second support plate. A resilient cup 13 is clamped to the second support plate and a pad 21 is bonded centrally to the cup. The pad has radial grooves 21b communicating with an axial bore extending through the head and in communication with a vacuum source. In operation the head is placed on an article and suction applied to the cup to grip the article. The article is then transferred to a grinding machine whereat downward pressure on the shaft 38 releases the locking action on the surfaces 25a, 28a and thus allows limited pivotal movement between the second support plate, and hence the article, and the first support plate and the shaft. Futher downward pressure on the shaft separates the surfaces 25a, 28a and allows greater pivotal movement between the plates about the ball and socket connection. |
