1478889 Flame proofing by transfer process C1BA-GEIGY AG 20 June 1974 [22 June 1973 26 July 1973] 27441/74 Heading D1P A dry thermal transfer process for flame proofing organic fibre material involves applying a specified halogenated flame proofing agent to an inert carrier material which is then brought into contact with the organic fibre material surface and the combination is heated at not less than 80‹C, if necessary with use of mechanical pressure, until the flame proofing agent has been transferred to the fibre material, and the fibre material is then separated from the carrier. The flame proofing agent is a compound of the formula I wherein A denotes halogen, hydroxyl, or alkoxy carbonyl (2-5C), halogenated alkoxy (1-4C) or halogenated phenyl and the X substitutents each denote halogen, alkyl (1-4C), hydroxyl or hydrogen, provided that at most one of the radicals X represents alkyl or hydroxyl and at least one of the radicals X represents halogen, and A can together with an adjacent radical X represent a carboxylic anhydride group. The carrier material may be a paper sheet, an aluminium or steel foil, a steel fibre fleece, a polymer coated fabric or a polytetrafluoroethylene fibre felt. The compound I may be applied to the carrier material alone e.g. by sprinkling as a powder, or in a preparation which contains at least one solvent and/or water, and optionally a binder stable below 250‹C e.g. ethyl cellulose, and the carrier then dried. Application of the carrier to the fibre material may be by heating plates with or without pressure, a hot calender for a tunnel-shape heating zone and optionally in vacuo, the temperature preferably being 150-220‹C. The organic fibre material may be in the form of flocks, tow, yarn, filaments, woven or knitted fabrics, fibre fleeces or needle punched felt or pile carpets, and may comprise synthetic polyamide fibres, polyacrylonitrile fibres, linear polyester fibres or mixtures thereof with one another or with other fibres such as viscose or wool.
