<p>1479505 Vehicle safety devices NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 20 Sept 1974 [5 Nov 1973] 41173/74 Heading B7H A vehicle gear shift mechanism includes a rotatable guide 14 for a striking rod (22) (Fig. 1 not shown) and a member 36 movable with part, particularly the guide 14, of the shift mechanism, the member 36 being lockably engaged by an electro-magnetically actuated member 46 should a vehicle occupant fail to observe certain safety precautions, particularly correctly setting his seat belt. In a particular embodiment the guide member 14 is rotatably mounted in a transmission housing 10 and an axially movable striking rod (22) is mounted therein. A select lever (28) (Fig. 1) connected to the rod to effect axial movement thereof also causes rotation of the guide 14. The member 36 connected to the guide has a recess 42 engagable by pin 46 on actuation of a solenoid 48. With angular movement of the guide locked the driver may only shift the striking rod axially to engage certain gears. The solenoid is controlled by a circuit which detects the seating and belt fastening of an occupant. The solenoid is energized to extend the pin until the occupant sits and fastens his belt whereupon it is deenergized and the pin biased to a retracted position.</p> |
