<p>Disposal of solid radioactive waste materials, esp. metal components such as valves, steel vessels and the like, consists of filling in the components with concrete and embedding them in concrete and then cutting or breaking them up. Pref. the resultant concrete blocks or objects are cut up by powder burning or powder fusion, esp. using exothermally oxidisable substances already mixed in the concrete. Method is used esp. for complete removal and disposal of nuclear power plants after their useful life. Individual large or small parts of the plant, for example, steam generators, are filled with concrete, surrounded with concrete and then cut up. This means that all the loose and difficult components, such as tube bundles, are held firmly in position during cutting. An additional advantage is than the amt. of exposed surface, emitting radiation, is very much limited since the greater part of the articles is covered and embedded in concrete which provides adequate shielding. Alternatively, saws may be used for cutting up the concrete blocks.</p> |
